With the extension, we had to find an urban and historical balance. The theatre is a magnificent building, a landmark in the city, an urban centrality. For us, its extension must be equal to it, it must create a new balance between the old and the new, while asserting its presence with strength and measure. We have therefore set up volumes that are on the scale of the site and that dialogue with the theatre. With this extension, the Théâtre de Verdun is moving towards the future, magnifying its transformation and asserting it.
As you can see, what we are proposing is a project that respects history. Through the materials, through the forms, we are installing a building that resonates with the theatre and with the place, without taking precedence over its existing architecture. This project was designed to serve the theatre itself. What we are trying to do in this building is to dramatise the space. We suggest extending the forecourt over the water in order to create a real balcony over the Meuse.
The key word of our project is that of a happy generosity, that of influence, so that the theatre continues to mark the history of the city.
